Providing neighborhood markets and more trading spaces can help alleviate the issue of roadside trading and dumping. Oyo State government has offered designated areas for vendors to sell their goods, it not only improves the overall cleanliness of the city but also provides a more organized and safe environment for both sellers and buyers.
The government is playing a crucial role in identifying suitable locations for markets and ensuring their proper maintenance. We are raising awareness about the benefits of using these designated areas so as to encourage vendors to make the transition and reduce roadside trading and improper disposal of refuse. Implementing such measures will contribute to a cleaner and more organized city, benefiting both residents and visitors alike.
Using Ibadan as a template for other towns in Oyo State is a great idea, Ibadan as the largest city in Oyo State with 11 out of 33 Local Government Areas, Ibadan can serve as a model for implementing similar measures in other towns. The experiences and lessons learned from addressing the challenges of roadside trading and dumping in Ibadan can be applied to other areas, considering the unique characteristics and needs of each town.
By studying the successful initiatives in Ibadan, other towns in Oyo State can tailor their approaches to fit their specific circumstances. Collaboration between the local government authorities, community leaders, Market Executives, Artisans and relevant stakeholders will be crucial to ensure the effective implementation of these measures.
Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in Oyo State organized a stakeholders meeting to raise awareness about the importance of proper disposal of refuse. Engaging various stakeholders such as market men and women, artisans, Traditional Rulers, Baale, Chiefs, Mogajis, Media Personnel, and other relevant parties is a crucial step in creating a collective understanding and commitment towards addressing the issue of waste management.
By bringing together these diverse groups, the ministry has effectively communicate the importance of proper waste disposal and highlight the potential environmental and health impacts of improper waste management. We used the meeting to serve as a platform to discuss practical solutions and strategies that can be implemented at both individual and community levels to promote responsible waste disposal practices.
We have taken 19 trips to address the issue of improper disposal of refuse along the Iwo Road axis, this shows a strong commitment of Oyo State Government to improve sanitation in the area. Regular and consistent efforts like these are crucial in maintaining cleanliness and promoting a healthier environment.
“We shall close markets that are not clean as this will serve as a strong deterrent and encourage market operators and buyers to prioritize cleanliness and proper waste management. We believe this will send a clear message that maintaining a clean and hygienic environment is non-negotiable and essential for public health and well-being.”
By taking decisive action to close markets that do not meet cleanliness standards, the state government is demonstrating its commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for residents. This not only protects the health of the community but also promotes a positive image of the area, attracting visitors and boosting economic activities.
“Oyo State can lead to a more coordinated and efficient approach to address roadside trading and dumping across the entire state. This will contribute to a cleaner and more organized environment, promoting economic growth and improving the overall quality of life for residents.” said the commissioner.
