In a grand ceremony steeped in tradition and pageantry, Governor Seyi Makinde officially approved the selection of Prince Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo. This historic event marks a significant milestone in the annals of the Oyo kingdom, as Prince Owoade assumes the revered throne.

The Oyo kingdom’s rich history is replete with illustrious leaders, including the iconic Alaafin Atiba, who was crowned by Ibadan and Ijaye in 1837. This pivotal event occurred in the aftermath of the collapse of Old Oyo-Ile, paving the way for a new era of leadership and growth.

Alaafin Atiba’s visionary leadership was exemplified by his strategic appointments, including the esteemed Oluyole and Kurunmi, who served as Basorun and Aare Ona Kakanfo, respectively. These appointments underscored the Alaafin’s commitment to fostering a robust and effective administrative framework.

Following Alaafin Atiba’s demise, the Ibadan Warlords, led by the formidable Balogun Ibikunle and Ogunmola, installed Prince Adelu as the new Alaafin of Oyo in 1849. This transition marked a significant turning point in the kingdom’s history, as the Oyo monarchy continued to evolve and adapt to the changing times.

In the early 20th century, Alaafin Lawani and his son Alaafin Oladigbolu ascended to the throne, with the assistance of Captain Ross. Their reigns were characterized by a deep commitment to modernization and progress, as the Oyo kingdom navigated the complexities of colonialism and rapid social change.

With the incoming coronation of Prince Akeem Owoade, the Oyo kingdom embarks on a new chapter in its illustrious history. Governor Seyi Makinde’s endorsement of Prince Owoade’s appointment underscores the state government’s dedication to preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of the Oyo kingdom.

As the people of Oyo kingdom and beyond celebrate this momentous occasion, they honor the enduring legacy of the Oyo monarchy.

In 1859, a significant event took place with the installation of Alaafin Adelu. This marked the beginning of a new era for the Oyo kingdom.

Later, two prominent figures, Lawani and Ladigbolu, played crucial roles in reclaiming the lost glory of Old Oyo from Ibadan. Their efforts paved the way for the kingdom’s resurgence.

Furthermore, Alaafin Atiba made a groundbreaking decision by reestablishing the new Oyo at Ago Oja. This location would later become known as Ago D’Oyo, marking a new chapter in Oyo’s history.

In the words of Prince Oluyedun Bello Oyewumi JP, PRO Ibadan Warlords: “Ibadan Agbe wa ooo Ilu Oyo koni bajÄ™ ooo IpinlÄ™ Oyo ko ni daru ooo Oduduwa yio gbe wa ooo.”

This ancient proverb, steeped in the rich cultural traditions of the Oyo kingdom, serves as a poignant reminder of the monarchy’s profound significance and the enduring spirit of its people.
